It provides several ways of formatting ASCII text files to decrease the amount of paper required. New with release 4.0, there are functions for creating editing and viewing these files as well as some accessories to help reduce the amount of times that you need to exit the program. This release of ListFile provides the following functions: File Printing File Viewing File Editing File Upload to Mainframe File Download from Mainframe Envelope Printing Envelope Database Calculator Calendar DOS Shell Mouse Support SAA/CUA Environment This version makes extensive use of the mouse, and has several options for use from the DOS command line. Network use is supported for individual customization and data files. File Menu The File menu offers choices for viewing, editing, printing and transfering files, changing directories, and exiting the program. Print... This selection allows you to print text files. Each file will be printed in the default format unless you change this using the OPTIONS PAGE FORMAT selection. If you have been editing or viewing a file, the most recent file will be displayed as the default. Select YES to print it, NO to select another file or CANCEL to abandon the printing completely. Since the print function reads the file from disk, it will not contain any changes you have made using the editor unless you save it first. Open a File Dialog Box The Open a File dialog box contains an input box, a file list, a file information panel, the standard button Cancel, one other action button Open, plus a history list that's attached to the Name input box Name The Name input box is where you enter the name of the file to load, or the file-name mask to use as a filter for the Files list box (for example, *.*). Files The Files list box lists the names of files in the current directory that match the file-name mask in the Name input box, plus the parent directory (the .. in the list) and all subdirectories (beginning with \). Selecting the directory will change the display to the files in that directory, but the change is not permanent. To change permanently use the Change Directory The File information panel shows the path name, file name, date, time, and size of the selected file. None of the items on this information panel are selectable. The Open button opens a file and places the selected file in a window or sends it to the printer. If you choose Cancel, nothing changes and no action occurs, and the dialog box is put away. (Esc always cancels a dialog box, even if a Cancel button does not appear.) In the Open a File dialog box, if you choose the Open button ListFile opens a new file and places the selected file in a window or sends it to the printer depending on your current function. View... The Open command displays the Open a File dialog box. In this dialog box you select the text file you want browse in a file viewer. The program SEND.COM is provided with your mainframe terminal emulation software. You will also need to be connected to the mainframe with a 3270 type adapter board. If the option appears disabled on your menu, then ListFile was unable to find it. You must also have a mainframe TSO session active and be at the TSO READY prompt. When you choose this option, you will be prompted for the name of the file you wish to transfer from the PC and the name of the mainframe file you wish to create. Do not include any quotes, but supply the full DSN including the high level qualifier when you enter the mainframe file name. You will also need to select the mainframe session window that your TSO session is active in. Select 1 if TSO is the first mainframe session window you started and 2 if it is the second. If the transfer times out you are either not logged on to TSO at the ready prompt or you selected the wrong session window. When the transfer is finished you will have to hit enter to return to ListFile. This allows you to view any error messages generated by the transfer. See File Download also. Download... Side By Side Two pages of 66 lines by 80 characters are printed side by side on a sheet of paper. Lines that are longer than 80 characters are truncated. Each sheet has a heading with the file name and file date on it and numbering for each page printed on the sheet. Vertical Numbered This is the default style. It will print a column of line numbers at the beginning of each line and place a heading at the top of each page. The heading consists of the file name and the print date and time. The text is printed Vertical on the page, 77 lines of text, 115 columns, using the Lineprinter Font. Portrait Un-numbered This will print vertical on the page, 80 lines of text, 133 columns, using the Lineprinter Font. No numbers or heading will be included. Horizontal Numbered This will print a column of line numbers at the beginning of each line and place a heading at the top of each page. The heading consists of the file name and the print date and time. The text is printed sideways on the page, 57 lines of text, 165 columns, using the Lineprinter Font. Landscape Un-numbered This will print sideways on the page, 60 lines of text, 176 columns, using the Lineprinter Font. No numbers or heading will be included. Normal 66 line Text will be printed in the printers default font with no headings or line numbers. This is 66 lines, 80 columns, Courier Font. Carriage Control Text will be printed using IBM carriage control characters (1, 0, -, +,). Text will be sideways on the page, and up to 176 columns wide by 60 lines long. The Lineprinter font is used. The overstrike option of the carriage control characters is not supported. Command Line Options Syntax: LISTFILE [option] [filename] [filename] ... where option is: E for edit, P for print in the default mode, V for View Filename is: the name of the file you wish to load You may load multiple files by specifying multiple files when you enter the command for example: LISTFILE P FILE1.TXT FILE2.TXT will print file1.txt and file2.txt in the default mode. If E was specified rather than P, an editor window would be opened for each file. If you specify a partial file mask as in the following: LISTFILE E FILE????.TXT Listfile will start with a file selection dialog and show only files that start with the characters FILE and that have the extension of TXT such as FILE1.TXT and FILESTUF.TXT. Any combination of DOS wildcards should work. Options and filenames should always be seperated by a space when you specify them. Using ListFile on a network Users may save their own configurations, defaults, and databases without affecting other network users by entering the following line in their AUTOEXEC.BAT file: SET LISTFILE=d:\directory where d: is any valid FIXED disk on the users computer, and directory is any valid directory path on that drive. This directory will be used to store the following files: LISTFILE.CFG (Default settings for ListFile) LISTFILE.TMP (a temporary file used for DOS sessions) LISTFILE.ADR (The mailing address database) It is not necessary to be on a network in order to use this feature. This will allow you to store the program away from the data files if you wish. It is also not necessary to use this on a network, but any changes to the defaults or databases will affect all users if you do not set them each up this way. If the network drive is write protected, nobody would be able to save addresses or defaults unless you install this way. Mouse Techniques In all cases when using the mouse, the left mouse button is used unless you have switched mouse buttons using a program option or a mouse driver option. Clicking is the pressing and releasing of the mouse button. This is usually done to select something or change the cursor position. Double Clicking is when you press and release the mouse button twice quickly. This is usually done to select something and then execute the default action. For instance double clicking on a file name in the file open dialog box selects that file and then opens it. Dragging something with the mouse is done by placing the mouse cursor on it, pressing and holding the button, and then moving the mouse. This technique can be used to highlight text in a text field or to move and resize windows. When the object is where you want it, release the mouse button. Selecting is done by clicking on an item with the mouse. Often in conjunction with the dragging technique. SAA/CUA ListFile conforms to Systems Application Architecture (SAA) Common User Access (CUA) and should be fairly intuitive to use if you are familiar with Microsoft Windows or Presentation Manager. For those who are not, or just need a refresher, the following pages describe some of the elements of the interface and how to use it. It is assumed here that you know basic mouse techniques Dialog Boxes A dialog box is window used to solicit input from the user. It usually consists of a series of input fields and check boxes or rabio buttons. When moving from item to item in a dialog box use the tab key and press enter only when you have completed the dialog. Each box usually has a default action signified by the OK button and a Cancel option. Enter is the equivalent of OK, Escape is the equivalent of Cancel. Buttons These are the way you tell the dialog what to do with your input. They are rectangular buttons which you select with the mouse. You will usually find them labelled OK, Cancel, Yes and No. You may move between them using the tab key as well as the mouse. Radio Buttons ( ) ( ) These buttons are always present in groups, and like the buttons on a radio, only one can be selected at a time. Select the button using the mouse, by typing the highlighted letter, or use the cursor and press the space bar. Check Boxes [X] Check boxes are similar to radio buttons in the way they are selected, but more than one may be selected at a time. Also they may appear by themselves. When selected they have the letter X in them. Entry Fields An entry field is a place to enter text often these fields scroll sideways to accommodate text that is longer than the input area. You can scroll these fields by clicking the mouse on the right or left pointing triangles at the ends of the field. These triangles only appear when there is more text than will fit in the display area. Use the tab key to exit not the enter key. History Fields These fields are a special type of entry field. You will notice them by the down pointing arrow to the right of the entry field. If you select this arrow, a window opens up displaying the last few things that have been typed into the field. You may select one of these items by double clicking on it with the mouse. To cancel this press escape or click the close icon. The file open entry field is an example of a history field. Windows Windows are all of those framed areas that appear on the screen with text files in them or entry fields and buttons. Most windows can be moved about the screen and many can be resized. There are commands to do this using the mouse or keyboard. Icons ListFile's windows may contain several types of ICONS which function as follows: The diamond on the title bar allows you to close the window, like ESC or F3. The up arrow on the title bar Zooms the window. The bar in the lower right corner is used to resize the window. Close Each window will have a small box in the upper left corner called the close icon. If you click on this icon, the window will close. This is the same as pressing escape or F3 key. Zoom In resizable windows, the upper right corner contains a box with a double or single headed arrow in it. This is the zoom icon. If the window is not at its maximum size, it will be enlarged when you click on this button. Clicking again will return it to the smaller size. Resize Resizable windows contain a highlighted corner in the lower right that can be used to change the size of the window. Place the mouse cursor on the corner, hold the mouse button down and drag the window to the size and shape you want, then release the button. Scroll Bar A scroll bar allows you to move through text files or selection lists using the mouse rather than page up/down or the cursor keys. To move up or down thru selections, use the bar on the right side. If you click on the arrow you will move 1 line in that direction. If you click between the arrow and the slider that appears in the bar, you will move a page. You may also drag the slider to any relative place in the file or list. Sometimes you will also have a scroll bar on the bottom for moving from right to left. These bars work in the same manner as vertical scroll bars. Slider The slider is the highlighted block in the middle of a scroll bar. It will show your relative position in a file or list by its relative position on the screen. At the top it indicates the top of list, the bottom is the end of the list. You may move quickly to the top or bottom by dragging the slider to the top or bottom of the bar using the mouse. Title Bar Each window is likely to have a title at the top of the frame. This is known as the title bar and can be used to move the window around the screen. Place the mouse cursor in the title, hold the button down, drag the window to the location you want, and release the button. Licensing ListFile is distributed as shareware, as such it is not free.
